Statement on Baltimore County Redistricting
2/25/2022 | John B. King, Michelle Siri
Maryland gubernatorial candidate John B. King Jr. and his running mate Michelle Siri, who resides in Baltimore County, released the following statement today in response to the decision by U.S. District Court Judge Lydia Griggsby to strike down the redistricting plan proposed by the Baltimore County Council:
The map put forth by the Baltimore County Council for redistricting the county would not have resulted in accurate representation for Black voters. With 30% of Baltimore County residents identifying as Black, having only one district that is majority Black within this new map just doesn’t make sense. We are glad that Judge Griggsby ordered a new map to be drawn that will better represent and protect the voting rights of Black and brown voters in the county. As we look towards the future, these moments are opportunities for us to get it right where we haven’t before. This is especially important when it comes to voting rights. We urge the Baltimore County Council to heed the voices of advocates and of the communities that will be impacted by this decision, and hope they will swiftly work to present a map that meets the criteria set forth by Judge Griggsby and most importantly – that gives the people who call Baltimore County home a fair chance for representation.
